Improvement in QC Environmental Monitoring Processes 

with Paperless Data Capture System

Overview

To support the manufacture of this diverse array of products, Lonza Walkersville, Inc operates 13 clean room suites as well as a Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) bleeding facility. The majority of these suites support Class 100/ISO 5 Aseptic Processing operations and require an extensive Environmental Monitoring (EM) program that generates large volumes of data. The concept of automating their EM program was the result of a company-wide Lean Six Sigma (LSS) initiative to eliminate waste, reduce lead and labor time, and avoid mistake-proof processes. The EM program was identified as a target for LSS improvements because of numerous issues related to managing the program and the ever increasing volume of data. Following extensive evaluation, mobile and wireless technologies by MODA (a paperless solution) was chosen to automate Lonza’s environmental monitoring and quality control SOPs.
